Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right. Yet for many Deaf individuals and people with disabilities, communication barriers continue to limit access to quality healthcare services. The Erasmus+ project HEAL – Healthcare Environment Needs Accessible Language was created to address this challenge by promoting more inclusive, accessible, and responsive healthcare systems across Europe. Through innovative training methods, digital tools, and accessible educational resources, the project aims to strengthen understanding, reduce inequalities, and empower both healthcare providers and patients.
Despite significant advances in healthcare, many Deaf individuals still face obstacles when seeking medical care. Miscommunication can lead to misunderstandings, reduced patient confidence, delayed treatment, and unequal healthcare outcomes. Healthcare professionals often receive limited training in accessible communication practices, making it difficult to provide fully inclusive services.
HEAL addresses these gaps by promoting practical solutions to help healthcare workers communicate more effectively with diverse patient groups. By improving accessibility and understanding, the project contributes to a healthcare environment in which every individual can actively participate in decisions about their health and well-being.
The HEAL project focuses on four key objectives:
- Improving communication and understanding between healthcare workers and the Deaf community.
- Integrating innovative digital tools, including a mobile application and sign language resources, into healthcare education and training.
- Empowering people with disabilities to advocate for their health rights and participate confidently in healthcare processes.
- Supporting the development of more inclusive healthcare systems that respond to the needs of all citizens.
Among the project's key outputs are:
- RESIST – The Guidebook, providing guidance and best practices for accessible communication.
- ADAPT – The App, a digital tool designed to support communication and learning.
- ACT – The Training Course, offering educational content that helps healthcare professionals build inclusive communication skills.
