There is broad agreement among experts that creative thinking is a key competence every entrepreneur should have. Quite often creative thinking is associated with "thinking-out-of-the-box".

But, what exactly do we mean by that? Why not stay inside the box and do the things the way we are used to? Why should we leave our comfort zone and enter unknown territory? After all we don't know what's outside the box, and we can't even know if there's anything at all. By the way: What is a box? Ok, let's assume that we know about the box we're in. But, how does this help us along, if we don't have a clue how to get outside. Finally, in the unlikely event that we manage to get to the other side, where should we go? As we are the first ones there, we can't expect signposts to show the way.

What do you think?

Iris Bos Thinking outside of the box in general means thinking on how to reach a goal different from the majority/mainstream paradigm of the current time. For example is everyone does a task in a certain way maybe there is another way of doing it. That is thinking outside of the box. The box is just the boundaries of how things are done at the moment.

Thinking outside of the box has a number of advantages for an entrepreneur. For example if he finds a better way on how to solve a task and he is the first one to do so he can patent it and then sell a product that solves the task thus making him money. First in the market is a big advantage for entrepreneurs. Yes you are right that thinking outside of the box is more risky and sometimes leads to a dead end. But entrepreneurship in general is a high risk endeavor.
