Archelon Sea Turtle Protection Society is a non-profit organization located in Glyfada that has been working hard since 1983 to protect sea turtles and their habitat in the Mediterranean Sea. Their work include research, conservation, and education, with the aim of raising awareness within the community about the importance of protecting these vulnerable species.
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting the center where I learned of an initiative undertaken by ARCHELON since 1992: the National Sea Turtle Rescue Network.
This network is responsible for recording incidents of dead sea turtles arriving on Greek coasts. Each year, ARCHELON receives detailed information about these incidents, providing valuable insights into the threats facing these animals.
According to data provided by Eirini Kasimati, ARCHELON's Rescue and Rehabilitation Officer, the number of reports of dead sea turtles has significantly increased in recent years, reaching a total of 983 reports in 2023.
