Happy Earth Day! Today, let's take a moment to appreciate the beauty and abundance of our planet, and reflect on how we can all contribute to its preservation and well-being. 🌍🌿🌱💚

Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable living. Our planet faces numerous challenges, from climate change to biodiversity loss, but together, we can make a difference.

Here are a few ways we can help build a more sustainable future:

- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Minimize waste by reducing consumption, reusing items whenever possible, and recycling materials.
- Conserve Energy: Opt for energy-efficient appliances, turn off lights and electronics when not in use, and consider renewable energy sources like solar or wind power.
- Support Sustainable Practices: Choose products and companies that prioritize sustainability, from food to fashion to transportation.
- Protect Nature: Preserve natural habitats, support conservation efforts, and participate in...

The coastal regions of Euskadi are currently facing an imminent threat as plastic pellets, originating from a spill that occurred off the coast of Portugal, are making their way towards its shores.

This environmental crisis, spreading from Galicia to Asturias, has prompted the Basque Government to devise "action mechanisms" in collaboration with local fishing associations.

This reminds us the importance of safeguarding our coastlines and the need for quick response capabilities from our governments and societies. We must be prepared to protect the environment and ourselves against crises like this one and others.

Together, we can collaborate and take action to improve the conditions of our coastlines and the environment as a whole.

Greece's Rivers Running Dry: A Harrowing Tale of Environmental Decline

In the northern regions of Greece, rivers are narrowing, lakes are shrinking and ecosystems are suffering the consequences of climate change. From the village of Kerasia to the shores of Lake Vistonida, communities face reduced rainfall, rising temperatures and disappearing water sources. The once-flowing Aspropotamos River now whispers quietly, repeating the predicament of many water masses across the region.

Experts warn of impending environmental catastrophe, as lakes such as Doirani face unprecedented water recession, threatening vital habitats and endangered species. Agriculture is also suffering the consequences of erratic weather patterns, with farmers struggling to cope with declining water supplies and crop failures.

As Greek rivers dry up and lakes disappear, urgent action is needed to address the root causes of this crisis. From coordinated conservation efforts to sustainable water management...

International Day of Zero Waste

🌍International Day of Zero Waste was instituted in December 2022 by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to be observed annually on the 30th of March.

This day serves as a reminder of the importance of adopting zero-waste practices to protect our planet and it celebrates our commitment to a sustainable future.

It promotes sustainability, especially sustainable consumption and production patterns, to reach awareness towards zero-waste initiatives. Also, to contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in UN’s Agenda 2030.

As the 30th of March just passed, I want to share with you a recent action taken by the EU to reduce not only food waste, but also textile one. Just a few weeks ago, on March 20th, the EU Commission took a significant step by adopting new rules to support the circular economy.

The new rules set out are:

cut down food waste by setting higher targets by 2030

Moreover, we directly combat one of the most pressing global challenges: climate change. Be the next one to play a role in this journey towards sustainability. By being mindful of our everyday behaviors and choices, we can contribute to a greener, healthier planet for generations to come. Continuing our exploration of fungi from previous weeks, I'm excited to share some fascinating information I've just come across. Recently, it has been found that several members of the Pestalotiopsis genus of fungi have the remarkable ability to degrade PUR (polyurethane) and convert it into organic matter in both solid and liquid suspensions. Two members of this genus were even able to survive solely on PUR in anaerobic (oxygen-free) and aerobic (oxygenated) environments.

This discovery has enormous implications for waste management and the search for sustainable solutions to plastic pollution. It's thrilling to see how nature provides us with innovative answers to our current challenges!

Archelon Sea Turtle Protection Society is a non-profit organization located in Glyfada that has been working hard since 1983 to protect sea turtles and their habitat in the Mediterranean Sea. Their work include research, conservation, and education, with the aim of raising awareness within the community about the importance of protecting these vulnerable species.

Recently, I had the privilege of visiting the center where I learned of an initiative undertaken by ARCHELON since 1992: the National Sea Turtle Rescue Network.

This network is responsible for recording incidents of dead sea turtles arriving on Greek coasts. Each year, ARCHELON receives detailed information about these incidents, providing valuable insights into the threats facing these animals.

According to data provided by Eirini Kasimati, ARCHELON's Rescue and Rehabilitation Officer, the number of reports of dead sea turtles has significantly increased in recent years, reaching a total of 983 reports in 2023. These data...

Environmental groups in Greece are sounding the alarm over proposed changes to shoreline protection laws. 🚨 They're urging the government to reconsider a decision that could jeopardize our coastlines.

Eight leading environmental organizations, including Greenpeace and WWF Greece, are raising concerns about a fast-track bill that would remove crucial protections for our shores. This move could pave the way for unchecked commercial exploitation, endangering valuable ecosystems.

🇬🇷 Greece is making big strides in improving its business environment, according to a recent report by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The country has shot up 28 spots to the top of the list among 10 nations showing the most progress. This positive change is thanks to the Greek government's efforts to make things more business-friendly by cutting taxes and implementing reforms.

The report suggests that these changes could lead to more growth in the economy, more investment, and more foreign money coming in. It's a promising sign for Greece as it works to build a stronger and more prosperous future. STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION - SNFCC
🌿 In the beautiful green landscape of Kallithea where the huge building dedicated to Stavros Niarchos is, a nice and sustainable project was born. #SNFCC 🚲

The commitment to sustainable mobility is linked to SNFCC bikes. 2.5km of bike lane were constructed between Kallithea and Athens. People have two options:

🚴‍♀️ they can rent bikes for a very cheap commission,

🚴‍♂️ or they can use their personal bikes, indeed they will find a parking spot as well.

Furthermore, around the huge Stavros Niarcos spot, different bicycle parking racks are in various SNFCC areas.

SNFCC fosters a bicycle culture, encouraging the use of bicycles as a means of transport, exercise, and recreation. 🌟 #SustainableMobility #BicycleCulture

www.ekathimerini.com/news/1234500/2023-a-year-of-n…

2023 was a year of extremes for Greece's climate. According to Climatebook.gr, Greece broke nine climate records last year. It was the hottest and driest in 30 years, with burning temperatures and minimal rainfall. Fires ravaged more than 174,000 hectares of land, well above the annual average. Sea temperatures spiked, leading to concerns for marine life and extreme storms such as Storm Daniel, which caused unprecedented rainfall in Thessaly.

These events highlight the urgent need for action on climate change. As temperatures rise and weather patterns become more unpredictable, it is crucial to address the root causes of these disasters. The effects of climate change are real and we must act now to protect our environment and future generations.
