Michael Osborne on European Commission's EPALE recently shared some thoughts on UNESCO's learning city initiative, concluding that ...

'we need to re-focus our thinking in Europe along the lines that UNESCO is promoting. A simple yet effective instrument might be to create a European City of Lifelong Learning award to parallel other city designations. I am convinced that such an award would interest many of our cities In Europe, and would lead to many benefits for all involved.'

norman longworth Yes. You will remember that this is one of the ideas we proposed throughout the noughties and failed to get traction from the Commission. Maybe it's time has come? 8 years ago

Randolph Recently met a EC decision maker in Romania. Told him about the idea of learning cities, followed by some ideas for projects. Guess I couldn't convince him, because after that he asked for something more tangible. 8 years ago

Randolph Currently there seems 2 major roads towards building learning cities. On one hand we have global strategies, such as the UNESCO one, while on the other more micro-oriented initiatives of urban planners, who seek to build 'learning cities within cities'. Guess it would be a big step forward if we could manage to marry both, the educators' and city planners' perspectives. 8 years ago

Randolph Norman, your reply reached me via email. So I copy it herein:

'There are also many more quasi-learning city initiatives - green cities, cities of opportunity, sanctuary cities, social cities, resilient cities, smart cities etc - more than 40 if you trawl the internet. Each of these has its own global network - yet they are all also learning cities in the sense that they are creating the city’s future through continuous learning. Equally to take your ;point about learning cities within cities, some are creating learning neighbourhoods within the city as a means of propagating the learning- Cork, Beijing, Taiwan, and most Korean cities are examples.'

Randolph More recently I also talked to Nikitas Patiniotis, former professor at Pantheion Univ., Athens. We discussed different options towards adopting the learning region concept in Greece. I this should be of interest for you, let me know. 8 years ago
